Once the second most important city in the Roman Empire, the historic city of Milano is often considered by historians to the real birthplace of Christianity in western Europe, rather than Rome which actually encompasses the Vatican City. The impressive Duomo di Milano is the largest of its kind outside of Rome and undoubtedly Milan’s number one attraction for history and architecture buffs as well as pilgrims. The seat of the Archbishop of Milan, this great gothic structure stands deep in the historical city centre not far from the central train station.
